This premium-quality honours board has a solid timber, radiused cornice (ideal for accomodating a logo), solid timber lippings to sides and bottom edge and a matching, 18mm veneered mdf panel. It is available in oak, ash, beech, sapele (similar in appearance to mahogany) and maple. All are finished as standard with a clear lacquer to enhance the full detail of the grain. Oak boards may also be specified with a dark stained finish applied prior to lacquering.
1200mm wide, these boards are frequently used when 3 columns of inscriptions are required and are available in heights of 600, 900, 1200 and 1500mm.

These boards have a solid hardwood moulded cornice and matching solid timber lippings to all other edges. For ultimate dimensional stability the panel is mdf finished with a matching veneer. They have a completely flat surface ideal for the application of lettering which is usually done in computer-cut vinyl, ensuring that any future additions can be accomplished both easily and to a consistent quality. Here we show you the layout which was prepared for a previous project using a board of the type chosen as we feel that this is the simplest way to quickly communicate an idea of the amount of information that you might expect to be able to show.
The illustration (right) shows a board with the following content:
- Title (in semi-circular area) – using 18mm high Arial text
- Main title – using 30mm high Arial text
- Inscription lines, 2 columns of 34 inscriptions using 13mm high Arial text
From this, we can see that the board is likely to accommodate 4 more inscriptions per column at this text size.
Please remember that this is only intended as an approximate guide and the amount of information that could actually be displayed will depend upon a number of factors including:
- The text size and font used
- The length of individual inscriptions
- Whether or not you have a title line, separate column headings and/or a logo
- Whether or not you wish to include border lines, column and/or section dividers

All our honours boards are made to order. Orders may be placed directly online by completing details of the required specification, by phone on 01280 701093, by email to sales@greenbarnes.co.uk. If you need us to quote your order number in correspondence or on the invoice, please be sure to include this when ordering. All orders will be acknowledged on receipt by email or (where no email address is supplied) in writing and will include an estimated date for completion.
Lead time
Lead time for production and delivery of honours boards is usually 4-6 weeks but may vary according to workload. If your order is urgent or has a specific deadline, please contact us to discuss your requirements and we will do our utmost to accommodate you.
Payment terms
Local Authorities, churches, schools, sports clubs and registered charities: 30 days from date of invoice.
All other non-account customers: Payment in full is required with order.

Delivery
Our preferred method of delivery will vary depending upon a number of factors including the weights of individual items in the consignment and the delivery address. The delivery method will be stated in our Order Confirmation. The usual methods of delivery for items up to 35kg (the majority of honours boards) and those exceeding 35kg are detailed below but please be aware that different arrangements may apply to remote areas and offshore islands. Exceptionally, if the size of an individual order or the mileage involved warrant it, we may opt to use a dedicated courier.
Orders where no single item exceeds 35kg are usually despatched via a UK nationwide courier on an overnight service, i.e. the consignment leaves us one day and you receive it on the next working day (Monday to Friday). As soon as your order is completed, we will contact you to arrange a suitable delivery day when someone will be available to receive it. All deliveries require a signature. Please note that this is NOT a timed delivery service and delivery could occur any time between 08:00 and 17:00 on the chosen day.
We appreciate that there is nothing more frustrating than having to set aside a whole day to receive a parcel, so if this is an issue, there are a number of possible work-arounds.
Firstly, it is generally possible to request a before 12:00 or before 10:30 delivery slot but this will attract an additional charge. If a timed delivery is essential please call us on 01280 701093 to place your order.
Secondly, it is sometimes possible for us to get the driver to contact you, say 30 minutes ahead of delivery, with an estimated arrival time. This is sometimes useful for deliveries to churches, village halls etc when you are close-by but not at the delivery location. It must be stressed however that there is no contractual obligation for the courier to do this and whether or not it happens will depend upon the goodwill of the driver concerned.
Thirdly, exceptionally and not recommended, it may be possible for you to nominate a “safe place” where the parcel can be left without being signed for but please be aware that in choosing this option, you assume full responsibility for the condition of the item as delivered as no claims for damage can be entertained for items received without a signature.
Orders where one or more items exceed 35kg are usually delivered by a specialist 2-man delivery team. As soon as your order is completed, we will contact you to let you know that it is being collected by our chosen specialist courier and shortly thereafter they will contact you directly to make final arrangements for the delivery.
How do I decide what size honours board I need?
There are a number of factors that will influence this, the most important of which are the number of inscriptions that you have (or will ultimately have) to accommodate and the size/shape of the space available. These are the two, key pieces of information required before you (or we) can start to calculate the size of board required.
Other things that need to be considered at this stage are what size text will be used (in itself determined by the distance from which the board will be viewed) and whether there are items such as logos, column headings and a dedication plate that need to be allowed for.
Remember that when there will be a considerable amount of information to display, the solution may well require more than one board.

Once I have a board, how do I get it updated?
We believe that keeping your honours board updated should be an easy task and, to this end, we do everything that we can to keep the whole process as simple as possible. Most importantly, there is generally no need to return the board to us with all the work and risk of loss and damage that this entails.
For existing boards (with vinyl text) that we have manufactured just send us the details of what needs to be added. If you have more than one board, be sure to tell us which board the additions are for. We will respond promptly with a quotation for the work required.
Once this is accepted the new text lines are cut and posted out to you, usually within 5 working days and often sooner, for you to add to the board. The process is straightforward and full instructions are included. We keep records of all the boards that we have made and details of text size, colour and font so you can be assured that the additions will be a perfect match.

How many inscriptions can I fit in?
For any given design of board, this will depend on a number of factors including the text size of inscription lines and whether there is a title, column headings, borders, logos etc.

What size text should I use?
As a general rule of thumb, we find that a text size of 15 – 18mm works well for inscription lines but ultimately this will depend upon the distance from which the board is to be viewed.

Do I get a layout proof to check before production?
Yes. We will email you a layout proof in pdf format with confirmation of receipt of your order. If you or we have made any errors or things just need to be tweaked slightly, respond to this to let us know and we will make the appropriate changes and resend the layout for approval.
Production doesn’t begin until we have a signed-off layout approval.
What fonts are available?
Our two most popular fonts are Times Roman and Arial and this is no accident. It’s because they are both clearly legible by design and generally appropriate for most applications. Times Roman is the more formal and classical of the two whilst Arial is a sans-serif font, giving a more contemporary look.
You are certainly not limited to these two however. We have a library of several thousand fonts, so if you have something specific in mind or something that you need to match, let us know and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.
Ultimately the font chosen should be appropriate for the job in hand. Comic Sans may be suitable for some applications but probably not a list of past vicars!
What artwork do I need to provide for logos?

What do you mean by………?

How does colour affect the legibility of the lettering?
Text is most easily read when there is a strong contrast between the colour of the lettering and the background colour of the board, hence for light timbers we would recommend using dark-coloured text and vice versa. Remember that lighting can also have a massive effect on legibility.
Gold text, although popular is the most problematic in this respect as whilst from one angle it can appear clearly distinct from its background, even a slight change in viewing position can render it all but invisible. Our advice is to go for a strong contrast and avoid using gold text if at all possible.
In the case of acrylic boards, legibility will also depend upon the colour and texture of the wall against which the board is viewed, not to mention the lighting and any shadows cast by the lettering as a result of the lighting conditions.
Do you do hand-painted lettering?
Unlike most of our competitors, we do indeed still offer a hand-painted lettering service (for wooden honours boards only). When contemplating the use of hand-painted lettering however, there are some extra considerations to be borne in mind.
- Convenience – unlike boards with vinyl lettering a hand-painted board will need to come to us on each occasion that it is updated, something which brings with it both additional transport costs and risk of loss/damage in transit. The timescale required for updating hand-painted boards is also measured in weeks rather than days.
- Cost – each hand-painted letter is, as the name suggests, individually hand-created by a skilled artist and this is, of necessity reflected in the cost which is calculated per letter rather than per line for the vinyl equivalent. It is impossible to give a general guide to the cost of hand-painted lettering as the cost per letter will depend upon the style (do the letters have shadows for example?) and transport cost may also form a significant part of the overall bill, but typically costs are many times that for the equivalent in vinyl.
- Consistency – Almost all of the boards that we are called upon to update with hand-painted lettering are longstanding examples where the original signwriter (or in some cases signwriters) are no longer in business. Many of these boards exhibit considerable variations in the quality and style of lettering over the years and, whilst we are happy that we can maintain more consistent results than most, we can’t guarantee to match the worst excesses of what has gone before!
Can you make new honours boards to match some that we already have?
The answer to this, which is probably not what you will want to hear, is both yes and no! Provided that you can supply us with enough detail (drawings, measurements, photographs etc) in most cases we would be able reproduce a fairly accurate copy of an existing board.
The difficulty comes on accurate colour matching of timber boards which is impossible to do from photographs and, due to the fact that timber will naturally darken with age, all but impossible to achieve anyway. What we can do, given an accurate starting point, is provide samples to establish how close a match we are able to offer.
If the board that you have already and are trying to match is one of ours, then we will certainly have records of what was supplied, so in this case the only likely variation will be one of colour as a result of any ageing of the original.

Each Greenbarnes hardwood honours board comes with a 5-year guarantee on the quality of workmanship and materials used. We guarantee to the original purchaser that our hardwood honours boards are free from defects in material and workmanship. “Defect” is defined as any imperfection which impairs the normal use of the board. This guarantee is expressly limited to the labour and material costs of repair within 5 years of the date of despatch and excludes the following:
1] Defects caused by the improper assembly, installation or disassembly.
2] Defects occurring after purchase as a result of use in unsuitable environments, unauthorised product modification, intentional damage, misuse, abuse or negligence.
3] Cosmetic damage.
4] Labour costs incurred in returning the board to us.

Consistency of finished colours
Natural timbers are subject to variations in grain detail and colour from one sample to the next. The examples shown on this website are depicted as accurately as the on-screen reproduction process will allow. However, you should be aware that slight variations may occur. If this is of concern, we are always happy to supply samples of materials and finishes on request.
